1 Desktop PC to Give Away

Update 10 June 2009 - both of the PC’s have now gone. Thank you for your interest.

Update: One of the PC’s has gone. So there is only one left!

One compaq PC is still available. It is a full size tower - if you want to use it as is that is fine, or if you want to build your own pc this would be great.

We were tidying up our office and found we have some more old hardware we need to get rid of. Before we throw it away though, I thought someone out there might have some use for some of it. If so help yourself.

The items are 2 desktop pc’s to give away. They are offered on an “as is” basis, and need to be picked up from the Azabu area in Tokyo.

Both are Compaq Pentium 2’s. The hard drives have been reformatted and have had ubuntu installed on them. They sound old, and they are, but with ubuntu they work fine for browsing the internet and writing documents. They both have full size cases.

Mounting a Nokia NM706i on Ubuntu

Mounting a Nokia NM706i on ubuntu (8.04) is very simple.

Simply:

Plug in the phone via USB.

At the command line:

dmesg | tail

You should see a line like:

[18373.951006] sd 2:0:0:0: [sdb] Attached SCSI removable disk

In this case, the Nokia phone has been connected as drive sdb.

Now, check that it is shown with:

cat /proc/partitions

If you can see it all good, now you have to mount it.

In my case:

sudo mount /dev/sdb /mnt

And there you go!

VoIP 101 for Business: What buyers & sellers need to know

An interesting introduction to the world of VoIP. If you are looking for options regarding your phone system, then you will probably find that this video gives you some useful background. Not deep and technical, but that can be a good thing.

From the description on the video page at youtube:

Speaking to an audience of independent distributors (telecom agents, channel partners & solution providers) author & educator Steven Sheppard gives a detailed 40-minute analysis of the pros & cons small businesses owners and decision makers need to be properly consulted about before they can “buy into” and benefit from adapting any VoIP solution or migration strategy into their businesses communication and technology suites.

The presentation was delivered in August 2006 at the Channel Partners Conference & Expo and was sponsored by XO communications. The video was recorded and edited by Telecom Association.

For more information about XO Communications please visit www.XO.com. The more information about Steven Shepard please visit www.ShepardComm.com. For more information about Channel Partners Expo please visit www.ChannelPartnersExpo.com. For more information about Telecom Association please visit www.TelecomAssociation.com.

In Japan I would recommend the company I work for: Denphone for an inexpensive and reliable phone system.

Used Hardware (Junk) to Give away

Tidying up our office and found we have some old hardware we need to get rid of. Before we throw it away though, I thought someone out there might have some use for some of it. If so help yourself.

The items are 2 desktop pc’s and 2  tape drives. They are offered on an “as is” basis, and need to be picked up from the Azabu area in Tokyo.

Update 28/10/08 - the desktops have gone. The tape drives are still there if anyone wants them!

1. Compaq Evo W4000 Desktop

Compaq Desktop

Compaq Desktop

The capacitors on the motherboard have blown. No ram, hard disk. but if you want a box to build a computer you could use this.

2. Dell PIV Desktop

Dell Desktop

Dell Desktop

This desktop works. Currently has Ubuntu installed - which doesn’t need a fast computer to work. So if you need a computer to surf the internet this would be fine. You will need your own monitor. Pentium IV 128mg ram, 10.2Gb hard drive, floppy drive, cd drive, ethernet card.

3. Fujitsu DLT Tape Drive

Fujitsu DLT Tape Drive

Fujitsu DLT Tape Drive

This doesn’t work. Don’t know what you would want it for, but there are plenty of creative people out there in Tokyo.

4. Compaq 20/40 GB DLT Tape Drive

Compaq 20/40 GB DLT Tape Drive

Compaq 20/40 GB DLT Tape Drive

Same condition as the Fujitsu tape drive.

These will be given away on a first come first served basis. For further details email simon at favilink.com, or call Tokyo: 03-4550-1513 and ask for Simon.

Update 28/10/08 - the desktops have gone. The tape drives are still there if anyone wants them!

Denphone - Japan’s most flexible Telephony Solutions

Long time since I posted here. Things have been busy as ever:)

A couple of weeks ago I started a new job, working for a VoIP Solutions company here in Tokyo. The company is called Denphone and it is based just down the road from where I live, in Azabujuban, Tokyo.

It is a very interesting company offering a wide range of Linux and open source IP telephony solutions, particularly using the Asterisk PBX software package. We also sell a lot of IP telephones, including Polycom, Cisco, snom, and Grandstream models. You can see some of them at the Denphone webshop. So I have had a lot of new products to get myself familiar with.

I will be putting up more links in the future, particularly related to VoIP and IP telephony especially Asterisk in the near future.
